Get Ready for SCDC!

Hello Arizona DECA!

The 2021 State Career Development Conference is well underway, and the State Officer Team is excited to see all members reach the #NEXTLEVEL in leadership, learning, opportunity, competition, and achievement!

First of all, I want to commend those who have successfully submitted their preliminary role plays and completed their testing earlier this week. Despite inherent challenges surrounding the nature of a virtual competition, the commitment and DECA-cation to preparing for one’s future is admirable and inspiring. The finalists for each event will be announced on Sunday, February 21.

Furthermore, the 6Connex virtual conference platform is set to launch on Friday, February 26. This is the central hub that will provide members with access to a variety of engaging content in a manner that closely resembles the atmosphere of an in-person conference.

Virtual workshops from the State Officer Team and business professionals will be available on-demand to offer an engaging learning experience. Information about the candidates for the 2021-2022 State Officer Team will provide a valuable resource for voting delegates, charged with selecting the individuals who will lead this association into the future. Club DECA is a place that will offer daily games and activities for members to complete by themselves, with friends, or with their chapters.

Finally, everyone should look forward to DECA After Dark, which will take place on Friday, February 26 from 7 P.M. to 9 P.M. Not only will this be a chance to network with peers from all across the state, but the fierce competitive spirit of DECA members will be put to the test in a dynamic session of games.

Overall, State Career Development Conference offers members an experience of incredible value. The challenge is to seize the moment and make the most of every opportunity available!

Yours in DECA,

Thong Vo | District 2 President

Happy Holidays from your Arizona DECA State Officer Team!

Hey, Arizona DECA! We hope you are all staying safe and healthy! In this pandemic we are all challenged with new circumstances and adaptations. However, one thing that will never change is the spirit of the holiday season. We asked each state officer about the holidays they celebrate, their traditions, what the holiday means to them, and how they plan on celebrating this year.

As you read each description, be on the lookout for a number: Date, quantity, time. If you find all of the numbers, list them in district order, and direct message the Arizona DECA Instagram. By messaging us, you will be entered into a drawing to win a DECA Drip Box!

District 1 – Liam Nelson

I am celebrating Christmas! Some of my family is religious, so Christmas does still carry the general Christian aspects to it. However, for myself and my two (2) immediate family members, Christmas is more so an opportunity to be cheery during a (relatively) cold and dark time of the year. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate with family! I am celebrating with my immediate family as well as extended family from Boston and New York City. A tradition my family has is that each year, somebody, usually the oldest member of the family, reads “The Night Before Christmas” to everyone on Christmas Eve.

District 2 – Thong Vo

I celebrate Christmas during the holidays. For me, this is about strengthening bonds with my family, especially those that I only see a few times every year. Usually, I take part in holiday festivities with relatives, although this year, it is looking more likely to be a Christmas with my parents and long-distance family members over a 6-way Skype call.

District 3 – Manvi Harde

I usually celebrate Christmas and New Years’ with my family! I don’t particularly observe Christmas, but it’s always a fun time with family and I’ve loved going to masses at midnight on Christmas Eve before.

We have always had a big New Years tradition with friends across the country, but unfortunately, we won’t be able to do that this year. I’m very excited to have a more intimate night with my family, though! I also really enjoy learning about other faiths’ holidays, so I’ve been trying to observe some Hanukkah traditions as well this month.

In addition to our big New Years tradition, the 2nd thing we do without fail is to go driving with friends and family to see Christmas lights!! It’s such a simple yet perfect way to celebrate this beautiful month.

District 4 – Jacque Quesada

I celebrate Christmas. For us, this holiday is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It all is also a time to give to our neighbors and spread kindness. Every year I celebrate with my family and friends! Our annual tradition is to host a Christmas Eve open house for our family and friends to come and celebrate! After, we open our Christmas presents super late on Christmas Eve, get a few hours of sleep, and then head to the airport to spend Christmas day on a plane to Maryland. I have spent almost every Christmas on an airplane but I wouldn’t change it for the world. We go back to see my mom’s side of the family and my great grandmother. It never has bothered me that I spend Christmas day on a plane, because I am with my loved ones and once we get to Maryland we celebrate Christmas 5 different days with various family members throughout the week! Even though we will not be doing these things this year, I hold the memories close to my heart and look forward to a safe and joyful Christmas!

District 5 – Emily Anasagasti

For me, my family and I celebrate Christmas. Christmas to me means family and spending time with those who you truly love. It is a time to be grateful and look forward to the upcoming year. I usually celebrate Christmas with my parents, my brother, my grandparents, and my cousins in California! Our biggest tradition is that my mom and I bake together every year. We make my grandma’s favorite recipes and usually spend about 7 hours total in baking, that doesn’t even include decorating!! It’s my favorite tradition and I look forward to it every year!

District 6 – Izzy Yadav

My family and I celebrate Christmas! Christmas is a time to reminisce on the past year, be thankful, and spend some quality time with one another, and to make an absurd amount of cookies! Each year I celebrate with my mom and dad, we have a tradition where each year one of us has to buy matching pajamas for us all. Then on Christmas Eve all 3 of us open our pajamas and wear them on Christmas Day!

District 8 – Brinlee Kidd

My family and I celebrate Christmas! As Christians, the significance of the holiday for us is the birth of Jesus Christ. I will be celebrating with my parents and my brother. One tradition that we do each year is finding chocolate coins in our stockings on Christmas morning! My family also celebrates my birthday on December 22; right before Christmas.

District 9 – Aakash Kakkar

Every year, my family celebrates Christmas. To me, this holiday commemorates the spirit of giving and the act of spreading the holiday spirit to family and friends. I typically spend Christmas with my dad’s side of the family. We either travel to Boston, Massachusetts or their family of 4 joins us in Arizona. Due to the current circumstances, we will be Zoom calling our family and friends on Christmas eve instead of joining them for Christmas dinner. I cannot forget to mention the bread pudding my sister makes for our family every year, which is always a highlight of the holiday! Although this year looks different, I am excited to spend time with my family and relax during this holiday season.

Please take this time, spend it with your family, relax, and celebrate! We cannot wait to see you all soon! Stay safe and have an amazing holiday season, Arizona DECA! One Diamond, One Family!

CompETE: A Recap

Over the past four weeks, the members and officers of Arizona DECA have been taking their competitive prowess to the #NEXTLEVEL by attending our virtual competitive training event, CompETE. CompETE was designed to give members the opportunity to learn more about DECA Competitive Event strategies, the different types of competition, and how to elevate competitive skills in general.

In week one we discussed how to select an event and covered the basics of DECA competition. We went in-depth about the differences between role plays, written events, and virtual challenges. Week 2 followed shortly where we reviewed the Event Cluster Exams in general, how to excel with amazing test-taking strategies, and collaborated on the best ways to find success! In weeks 3 and 4 we dove even deeper into 21st Century Skills for written events and roles plays and discussed how you can use those skills to your advantage in competitive events.

This conference was filled with creative ideas, collaboration, and commitment. Everyone gave their best advice and ideas and it was amazing to see everyone continuing to collaborate.

Team 60 hopes this event gets everyone in the competitive mood as we head into competition season. It’s important to remember to always push yourself to your furthest limits and strive toward your greatest goals. Thank you for an amazing CompETE!

With Warm Regards in DECA,

Emily Anasagasti

Thanks…Giving Tuesday! Take Your Chapter’s MDA Giving to the #NEXT LEVEL!

This year Arizona DECA is proud to announce that we will be participating in the global movement known as Giving Tuesday, that occurs every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The purpose of this movement is to kick off the charitable season each year. This Giving Tuesday, Arizona DECA wants to highlight the Muscular Dystrophy Association by encouraging members to donate through fundraisers hosted by your chapter, interacting with Arizona DECA’s events and by continuing to participate in the Community Service Competition. We are so excited to be releasing all the information that your chapter will need to make the beginning of this charitable season DECAmazing, in the days leading up to Giving Tuesday!

Team 60 is thrilled to be hosting a Arizona DECA Game Night on December 3rd at 5:15pm after the Arizona One DECA Call. All of the proceeds from this game night will be donated to the MDA. With a donation of just 5 dollars, you will get to play some great games, network with other members, and in addition we will be having 4 winners at the end of the night. Our first place winner will receive a stylish DECA crewneck and the following 3 players will be awarded with one of our new DECA Drip boxes! To ensure your Zoom square at game night, click the following link:

It is important to recognize that the donations your chapter raises, no matter the amount, can make a difference in impacting the life of someone that is living with muscular dystrophy. Every single dollar counts. We would also like to recognize that Giving Tuesday is the launch of the year’s charitable season; it is important to not only participate in the fundraising events but to also contribute by doing other initiatives such as the Community Service Competition. As always if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to your Arizona DECA State Officer Team!

WRLC Recap!

Last week, Washington DECA held the Western Region Leadership Conference (WRLC), a virtual conference where DECA members can INNOVATE their leadership and competition skills, educational goals, and career aspirations! WRLC offered a plethora of workshops, live keynote speaker sessions, and competitive events for all attendees to elevate their leadership potential and personal development.

The opening session deserves a full page of compliments, but I’ll try my best to keep it short for you. WOW! Washington DECA hosted a “Parade of Associations,” where each Western Region Association was showcased for a few moments. That was an incredible idea, as it helped us all feel united, even though we’re thousands of miles apart! Furthermore, Howard White, the Vice President of the Jordan Brand, spoke, and his inspiring journey through the NBA and NIKE, Inc. really connected to the trailblazers that comprised the audience.

All the guest speakers featured through the conference were perhaps the most compelling aspect of WRLC. Besides Mr. White, Dave and Dara Feldman from Virtues Matter spoke to us about the incredible importance of treating others with kindness and respect, which is more relevant than ever today! Paired along with the Innovation Quest that was hosted through GooseChase, the session with them amounted to not only an exciting competition but also a valuable community awareness tool.

Additionally, the vast assortment of workshops available through the 100XED platform also transformed my experience of WRLC. Leaders from small and big businesses alike that are experienced in digital marketing and technology, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, professional development, competition, and sports and entertainment all led concise but powerful sessions that were catered to the needs of the 21st century workforce and the skills acquired through DECA. A workshop I loved was “5 Laws of Stratospheric Success,” which explored innovative businesses and leaders in order to help the audience understand how they can apply those same go-giver principles in their life right now.

The State Officer Team’s favorite part of the whole conference was obviously the competition. Attendees could compete in different and extremely innovate competitive events to train for the state conference and earn medals! The feeling of getting back into that competition mindset was definitely awesome, and I’m so pumped for all of Arizona DECA’s competitions now!

Lastly, the closing session was right up there with that opening session. With an incredible DECA alum’s keynote session, and Clara McAdams from Barry Goldwater High School and Dominique Mendoza from Casteel High School representing Arizona DECA with their two medals, WRLC couldn’t have ended on a better note.

Due to the NUMEROUS opportunities contained in WRLC, Arizona DECA’s State Officer Team hosted an Instagram Live every day to recap the events and experiences in far more detail. Make sure to check these out on the IGTV section on the Arizona DECA Instagram for a closer look at what made WRLC incredible. Also, make sure to check out the instagram to see the very SPECIAL PROMO VIDEO for WRLC 2021 hosted in none other than Scottsdale, Arizona!

Chapter Campaigns take you to the #NEXTLEVEL!

Hey Arizona DECA!

I hope you all are doing well and staying safe during these unprecedented times. I am so excited about this month because it is DECA Month! We have been participating in DECA Inc.’s daily posting schedule and it has been so amazing seeing all of your DECA highlights and memories! Before we move further into my favorite month of the year, I want to share some information about Chapter Campaigns!

Every year, DECA offers five unique campaigns that help chapters grow, engage new members, and build long-lasting relationships within schools and communities. These campaigns elevate chapters and help develop programs of work! Chapter campaigns are broken down into five categories: Membership, Global Entrepreneurship Week, Promotional, Community Service, and Advocacy.

Here is a brief overview of each one:

Membership
The membership campaign is designed to help chapters grow by making the DECA experience available to more student members, keeping alumni involved, and engaging professional members such as administrators, teachers, and business partners. To complete this campaign and receive recognition, chapters must recruit a group of 20 new members, alumni, and/or professional members. The submission deadline is December 1st, 2020, and we can’t wait to see how you all take on this campaign!

Global Entrepreneurship Week
Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 16th to November 22nd) is a time for chapters to engage in outreach activities, innovation challenges and learn about the future of business. Each chapter’s three innovative challenge entries, three local entrepreneur success stories, and three school/community outreach activities are due by December 1st. Entrepreneurship is a fundamental part of business and will help you and your chapter reach the next level of success.

Promotional
This campaign provides chapter members an opportunity to share what DECA is all about with their school and community. It is time to put your passion into action! You can get recognized for this campaign by conducting three school outreach activities, three community outreach activities, and sharing three alumni success stories. Be sure to submit your information by December 1st.

Community Service
To complete this campaign, chapters must host at least one community service activity/event and have at least 75% of their chapter in attendance. Although we are virtual, we still hope to see you all participate in community service. Only one community service event is required for this campaign, however, we want to see your chapter take this to the next level by taking on multiple activities. For inspiration, check out the Arizona DECA Task List! The list has a range of activities and we cannot wait to see you tackle this campaign. Make sure to submit all of your information by December 1st!

Advocacy
This campaign takes place in February 2021, during Career and Technical Education Month. You can get involved in this campaign by conducting nine outreach activities. The nine activities will be dedicated to reaching out to policymakers, school officials, and your community. Your Arizona DECA State Officer team will be launching an advocacy guide for you all to utilize, and we can’t wait to see the impact Arizona DECA can make with our representatives this year! Make sure to submit all of your information by March 1st, 2021!

These are great ways to get involved and receive recognition and awards for your chapters at the state and international level! If you have any additional questions about chapter campaigns please feel free to reach out to me or head to:
https://www.deca.org/high-school-programs/high-school-chapter-campaigns/

By participating in these campaigns you are taking your chapter to new heights. We encourage you all to continue thinking about ways you can inspire and motivate members during these uncertain times.
It is remarkable to see how hard you all are already working to keep your chapters successful and prosperous and I cannot wait to see what we continue to do together!

Keep it up, Arizona DECA!

Yours in DECA,

Aakash Kakkar
Arizona DECA State President and District 9 President

Introducing Arizona DECA Chapter of the Month!

Hey Arizona DECA! Your State Officer team is very proud to announce Arizona DECA Chapter of the Month! This program is designed specifically to showcase and recognize chapter accomplishments! The Chapter of the Month program provides an opportunity for chapters and members to reach out and communicate with other chapters and members statewide. No matter the size or location of your chapter, there is always a way to be original and resourceful within our communities. During these unprecedented times, it’s vital to continue to be innovative, motivated, and most importantly creative. Chapter of The Month is curated to inspire members to take their chapters to the #NEXTLEVEL!

How can your chapter be chosen as the next Arizona DECA Chapter of the Month? It’s simple, all you need to do is fill out the application that includes a picture and a short description of something creative your chapter engaged in. Some application ideas may include a cool community service project, a fun meeting your chapter had, or even an event your chapter held or participated in! Once turning in the application your Arizona DECA State Officer team will go through each individual application and choose one chapter for that specific month! The chosen chapter will then be showcased on Arizona DECA social media accounts and will also receive some fun prizes! Chapter of the Month applications will open on the 1st and close on the 22nd of each month.

The Arizona DECA November Chapter of the Month application form will open on November 1st and will close on November 22nd, 2020. Apply at decalink.org/CoM!

Where Are They Now?

One of Arizona DECA’s most prominent bragging rights is our famous State Officer Alumni! We all know that Mattie Bradford and Catherine Horton are killing it in international offices over at DECA Inc., but the rest of their former teammates are working just as hard to be shining examples of success in their own right! Let’s catch up with a few members of the 2019-2020 State officer Team to see where they are now!

Former District Eight Representative, Connor Wren is staying focused on the future by double-majoring in Finance and Management at Arizona State University. Connor hopes to use his degree to reach senior management within a company. He claims that the best way for him to stay on track with his online class load is to maintain a structured routine.

Both Amber Adams (former State President and District Five Representative) and Abby Kiekintveld (former District Four Representative) are studying Supply Chain Management at Arizona State University. Amber is already starting to build her future in property investment and real estate as she uses her skills to build up a clientele. Her experience as a State Officer, from traveling, advocating, and attending meetings, helped her learn to effectively manage her time; a skill she says is very valuable to her in college.

Abby is also getting the most out of her program of study as she says her favorite class so far is “Intro to Human Communication.” She also shows us that your network truly is your net worth by participating in ASU Sync and a leadership program on campus. Abby is most looking forward to connecting with the other young leaders in her program that are driven to make a positive difference.

Former District One Representative and State Secretary, Nicole Ruiz attends the Barrett Honors College at ASU where she studies Business Entrepreneurship. As she looks toward a future in non-profit work, she reminisced on her past state officership saying that her experience taught her valuable lessons about teamwork and working with a group of leaders. We can all relate to Nicole when she shares that she is most looking forward to the social life on campus returning to a normal and safe environment!

Finally, former District Seven Representative, Brigid Fitzgerald is currently studying Political Science at Arizona State University. She is planning to graduate early, pursue a masters degree, and says she enjoys working remotely at her own pace. Brigid claims her time as a State Officer helped her develop skills such as time management, good communication, and team building. We are sure her experience with DECA will help her achieve success as she moves toward post-graduate and internship opportunities. Remember to vote Fitzgerald for President in 2040!

Although the 2019-2020 State Officer Team has varied interests and goals, one thing stays very much the same: their shared affection for our Arizona DECA family! We look forward to seeing the amazing things they do in the future and we have no doubt that with their heart, determination, and experience they’ll get far!

Yours in DECA,
Brinlee Kidd
